Aims to be among top two telecom firms

Reliance Communications is aiming to be among the two top telecom operators in revenue market share across all the circles, moving up from its present fourth slot in most circles. The company intends to make this happen in Mumbai – the most lucrative in the country – first and move to other telecom circles.

“We expect to emerge among the top two companies in Mumbai in the next three-four quarters, and step by step we would look at being in the top two in other circles too,” RCom President and Chief Executive Officer (Wireless Business) Gurdeep Singh told Business Line .

For Mumbai, the company has entered into an intra-circle roaming agreement with Loop Mobile for 2G GSM services to share its 900 MHz spectrum. RCom will use this spectrum the best quality radio waves, for its 2G post-paid services.

The move will enable the company to offer quality services in the metro. The company, controlled by Anil Ambani, holds 1800 MHz (GSM), 800 MHz (CDMA) and 2.1 GHz (3G) radio waves in Mumbai circle.

Apart from improving network efficiency, this would help the company provide superior in-building and outdoor coverage and better data connectivity too.

“A lot of potential revenues are being held by the incumbents, who had the early mover advantage. The same is the case with subscriber base also,” he said.

The quality spectrum would enable RCom to poach corporate, small and medium enterprise and high-data usage customers from the existing operators.

RCom, which had earlier signed a similar deal with Aircel for all circles, is also negotiating with other operators for similar agreements. Such agreements, expected to be in place by the second quarter of this financial year, would enable RCom to strengthen its network and customer base across all the circles.

AGGRESSIVE 3G PLANS

RCom would also look at becoming more “aggressive” in adding 3G customers to its network in Mumbai. The company is the third operator, with Bharti Airtel and Vodafone India being other service providers in the circle.
