Anil Ambani controlled Reliance Communications has launched India's first operator branded 3G tablet at a price of Rs 12,999.
The 7-inch “Reliance 3G Tab,” which is based on the Android operating platform, will be locked to the company's 3G service, Mr Mahesh Prasad, President, told newspersons here on Tuesday. Reliance 3G also comes with exclusive bundled data service plans that would take the overall cost of owning a tablet between Rs 17,499 and Rs 19,999 depending on which data plan is taken for the 12-month period.
The tablet has been enabled for push email and is equipped with two cameras. It is preloaded with 15 popular applications such as Facebook, Twitter and so on.
Manufacturing partner
Chinese company ZTE is RCom's manufacturing partner for this initiative. The tablet is being launched today in Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata while it will be made available in the 13 circles where RCom has 3G licences over the next few days.
The company has also setup a 24-hour customer service facility for providing technical assistance.
Growing market
Though the Indian tablet market is still very small, market watchers expect it to grow exponentially with the advent of 3G mobile services. Apart from global majors such as Apple, BlackBerry, Samsung, Motorola and others, a number of Indian brands such as Olive and Adam are also vying for the pie with cheaper versions of the tablet.
The RCom scrip was down by 4.55 per cent to close at Rs 83.9 on the Bombay Stock Exchange today.
