Electronics product maker Simmtronics Semiconductors has bagged an order worth $ 10 million from three West Asian-based companies for supplying high-end tablet PCs.
“We have seen trust of foreign firms increasing towards products manufactured in India. Three firms based in West Asia have selected us for making tablets for sale in overseas market.
“The order is worth $10 million which includes production of high-end tablets costing $180 per unit,” Simmtronics Semiconductors Managing Director Indrajit Sabharwal told PTI.
He named Dubai-based Jumbo Electronics as one of the firms that has signed the deal with the company.
“High-end tablets constitute 25 per cent of the total orders. Rest of the order is for tablets in 9.7, 8- and 7- inch size which will have SIM card slot and can be used for phone calls,” Sabharwal said.
He said that steps taken by the Government have helped them increase production. “One of the top three mobile device companies in India has also started sourcing tablet from us.
Earlier, they imported their entire products from China.”
The Government imposed 6 per cent Customs duty on mobile phones priced above Rs 2,000, including tablets in the budget for current fiscal, making their imports costlier, he added.
Elaborating further on high-end tablet models that are to be exported, he said the product will be built on Android platform’s latest version Jelly Bean with a 1.2 Gigahertz quad core processor.
“These high-end tablets will have a 10-inch screen. It will be 3G tablet with wi-fi support. Users of the tablet will be able to make both phone and video calls using VOIP applications like Skype. We will provide 5 megapixel rear camera and 2 MP front camera in it,” Sabharwal said.
The tablet will have 2 Gigabyte (GB) RAM and in-built storage of 16 GB that can be expanded up to 32 GB.
The company has three manufacturing plants in the country, located in Bhiwadi, Roorkee and Greater Noida.
