Are you among the millions of football fans glued to TV sets, but rue the absence of Indian participation in the FIFA World Cup? Worry no more. You have a reason to smile.

A group of Tech Mahindra employees is working round the clock in Brazil and Hyderabad to make the event glitch-free.

“We are proud to be associated with the biggest game on the earth. We’re supporting the IT operations for the World Cup, with 100 Tech Mahindraites working at 12 venues,” Tweeted Anand Mahindra, Chairman of the $16.7-billion Mahindra Group and a football enthusiast himself.

Tech Mahindra’s association with the FIFA is not something new. The sports window, launched by Mahindra Satyam (which was absorbed by Tech Mahindra) a few years ago, had worked with FIFA at the 2010 edition of the World Cup hosted by South Africa.

But the company has kept its contribution to the soccer jamboree low key as it is no longer a sponsor.

While most of the hundred employees are manning the 12 venues in Brazil to provide the IT backbone to the event, about 10 staffers here are handling some back-end work related to languages in ticket sales. The team, working out of the former headquarters of the company, is assisting in four languages— French, Portuguese, English and Spanish.

The sports arm had helped the $3-billion Tech Mahindra get an image makeover for Satyam, whose credibility was at the lowest after it was hit by a financial scam in 2009.

The arm provides services such as event management systems, new media solutions, stakeholder relationship, and back-office support.
