“We maintain that neither Uninor (Unitech Wireless) nor any of its officials have done anything inappropriate or illegal”

Representatives of telecom companies named in the chargesheet filed by the CBI on the 2G spectrum scam on Saturday said they would wait for the court copy before commenting on the allegations.

A statement issued by the official spokesperson of Uninor (Unitech Wireless) said: “Several telecom companies, which received licenses/spectrum since 2001, are being investigated by CBI and it is not limited to Uninor. We understand that CBI has named Uninor (Unitech Wireless) and its Chairman in the first charge sheet filed today. Since we have not received the copy of the charge sheet, we are not aware of the charges made therein and therefore, cannot comment.” Expressing full faith in the judicial process, the spokesperson said: “We have fully co-operated with the investigating agency and will continue to do so. We reiterate that Uninor (Unitech Wireless) obtained the telecom licenses along with 8-9 other players in 2008, after complying with the applicable DoT guidelines at a fee prescribed therein. We maintain that neither Uninor (Unitech Wireless) nor any of its officials have done anything inappropriate or illegal. We have full faith in the judiciary to get an opportunity to explain our stand and it will be vindicated in due course.” A statement by Swan Telecom, another company named in the charge sheet said: “CBI has named Swan Telecom (now known as Etisalat DB Telecom Pvt Ltd) in its chargesheet in the FIR pertaining to the 2G scam matter. We understand that the chargesheet is a voluminous report of approximately 80,000 pages. The company would peruse the contents of the same and issue an appropriate clarification, thereafter.”

Referring to the three persons named in the chargesheet, a Reliance Telecom spokesperson said: “The CBI media release itself states that the charges are based on its own investigations, and the accused are presumed to be innocent, till their guilt is finally established after a fair trial. “The charge-sheet is being studied, and as legally advised, the persons so named deny the charges, and will defend themselves in the appropriate legal proceedings.”
