Ahead of the Assembly polls in Tamil Nadu, the AIADMK, backed by the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), on Wednesday turned the heat on the government for “going slow” on the Aircel-Maxis case, flashing a report that alleged that former finance minister P Chidambaram’s son Karti had made “shady” realty investments across the world.

Refuting BJD MP Bhartruhari Mahtab’s charge, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said: “Nobody, however powerful he is, will be spared if found guilty. We have no holy cows to protect. Accusing us of going slow in the probe is incorrect.” He said the CBI had already filed its charge-sheet and the trial would begin soon.

Jaitley, who also holds charge of the Corporate Affairs Ministry, informed the House that after a “series of raids conducted by the Enforcement Directorate and the Income Tax Department, a lot of incriminating things have been seized.”

He said the probe agencies had absolute freedom to record the entire evidence, “and if they come to an opinion that some people are prima facie guilty, the investigating agencies are free to take action”.
