Personal computers and smartphones maker Asus India has said that it will start selling commercial computers from next year.
It will include all-in-ones for both government projects and SMEs. Till now the company has been selling only laptops and tablets. It recently started selling smartphones too, with its ZenFone series.
“For laptops we had focused more on consumer side. So far we had 95 per cent of sales coming from them. Now we have started looking at commercial projects and government deals, and have started another business unit for such projects this year,” Peter Chang, Country Manager, Asus India, told
The move will help the company become a complete computing devices provider and improve its turnover, he added. Asus had a turnover of around ₹600 crore last year and expects a better number this year.
“In India, around 60 per cent of the total PC sales came from individual consumers and the rest from commercial entities. If we have only end-consumers business then it will be difficult for us to gain market share. That is why we decided to enter the commercial business early next (calendar) year,” he explained.
Without revealing project details, Peter said right now the company is evaluating a few projects similar to the Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu and is trying to get some participation.
“We are already evaluating three-four projects of the government. And, there are more talks happening for the SMEs,” he said.
When asked about the pricing of the products — considering many companies back off government deals because of the low-priced models - he said: “Sometimes we have to compromise on pricing and that is a dilemma for such projects. But, we will try our best to fit the pricing.”
The company’s main agenda is set by market share and not turnover, he added.
“We are aiming at 10 per cent market share each in notebooks and tablets next year, from 8 and 5 per cent respectively right now,” he said.
Following its smartphones foray in July, Asus has sold around 3 lakh units till now and is expecting a 5 per cent market share in the Indian market, Chang added.
