ByondTech unveils nine tablets, launches ‘Laplets’

ByondTech Electronics on Friday launched nine tablets in the seven to ten inch range and one android-based mobile phone.

The Pune-based company, part of the diversified Canpex Group, has launched what it describes as Laplet, a range of tablets. These Laplets come with a case and a keyboard helping in using the tablet as a personal computer.

The Mi Book series is priced in the range of Rs 4,250 to Rs 10,000 and come with android Ice Cream Sandwich operating system. The company plans to shortly introduce other SIM-based range powered by latest Jellybean operating system. These tablets can be used with data cards (dongle).

Addressing a press conference here today, Prashant S. Mutha, Managing Director and Prashant Bora, CEO, ByondTech said the company has a manufacturing unit in Shenzhen, China through a local partner which enables them to source these tablets for sale in India and other markets.

The company is also in the process of finalising plans for an assembly line near Pune.

"We have thus far invested about Rs 100 crore in the mobile business. Last year, we closed with revenues of Rs 300 crore and expect to increase this to Rs 500 crore during 2012-13," Bora said.

The factory, set up with an outlay of $ 5 million (about Rs 27 crore) has capacity to manufacture 4 lakh mobile handsets and one lakh tablets per month. The company’s R&D centre is playing a crucial role in designing innovative products. One such is ‘air mouse’ that functions wirelessly, he said.

Bora said the laplet will be particularly useful for those who find it tough to key in using the touch interface.
