India's Internet traffic will grow 9-fold by 2015, at a compound annual growth rate of 55 per cent according to a new report from Cisco.

In its new Visual Networking Index Forecast, Cisco said India's Internet traffic will reach 1.1 Exabytes a month in 2015, which is equivalent to watching 273 million DVDs.

“In 2015, the gigabyte equivalent of all movies ever made will cross the Internet every 5 hours. Indian Internet traffic in 2015 will be equivalent to 53x the volume of the entire Indian Internet in 2005,” the Cisco report said.

Key driver

Main driver of the uptake in Internet usage will be video. Internet video traffic will be 63 per cent of all consumer traffic in 2015, up from 20 per cent in 2010.

“About 99 billion minutes of video content will cross the Internet each month in 2015, up from 7 billion in 2010. Video will exceed half of India's consumer Internet traffic by year-end 2013,” Cisco said.

Wireless technologies will be the primary mode of delivery. Mobile data traffic will grow 114-fold between 2010 and 2015 at a compound annual growth rate of 158 per cent.

“Indian mobile data traffic will grow 4 times faster than Indian fixed IP traffic from 2010 to 2015. India's mobile was 2.2% of total IP traffic in 2010, and will be 28 per cent of total IP traffic in 2015,” the report said.

The uptake in Internet usage will also lead to more devices. There will be one billion networked devices in 2015, up from 570 million in 2010. It is expected that there will be 1.1 networked devices per capita in 2015, up from 0.5 per capita in 2010. The average broadband speed will grow 4.1-fold from 0.9 Mbps to 4 Mbps between 2010 and 2015.

Globally, Cisco predicts that the number of network-connected devices will be more than 15 billion, twice the world's population, by 2015. In the fifth annual report, the company also said the total amount of global Internet traffic will quadruple by 2015 and reach 966 exabytes a year.

Mr Suraj Shetty, Vice-President of worldwide service provider marketing, Cisco said, “The explosive growth in Internet data traffic, especially video, creates an opportunity in the years ahead for optimising and monetising visual, virtual and mobile Internet experiences.”
