Asus, the $13-billion computer hardware and electronics company, will consider setting up a manufacturing plant in India.
However, the Taiwanese company wants clarity on issues such as taxation and duty structure, according to Peter Chang, Regional Head, South Asia and Country Manager, Systems Business Group, Asus India. “We are evaluating the need for a manufacturing plant here. However, it depends on the government policies and also volume,” he told BusinessLine on the sidelines of the launch of the Zenfone Series.
The company, which is ranked No. 4 in notebook computers, hopes its launch of smartphones and tablets will give the required volume to consider the plant, he said. The top vendors are Samsung, Micromaxx and Karbonn.
India is a price sensitive market, and Asus is launching products customised to India. For instance, its ZenFone 4 is priced at ₹5,999, which can compete with Moto G in that price segment and features, said Chang.
The company also recently launched ZenFone 5 at ₹9,999. “These two under ₹10,000 range offers us a solid base to tap the growing smart phone market,” he newspersons on the launch of these products in the city. Being the second largest exporter of IT services and home to growing number of IT firms makes Chennai as one of the important markets for Asus, he said.
