Hong Kong listed mobile handset company, Coolpad Overseas, will launch its Android operating system based CDMA-enabled tablet PC in November this year. Distribution and marketing of these tablets are likely to be carried out by Mr Anil Ambani-controlled Reliance Communications.

The tablet, to be priced below Rs 12.000, will compete with similar price-sensitive GSM enabled ones in the market.

“We will continue to focus on the CDMA segment and launch the tablets in November this year. Talks are on with Reliance Communications to market the product,” Mr Sami AlLawanti, Managing Director, Coolpad Communication told Business Line .

Joint venture

Coolpad Overseas is a joint venture company of Shenzhen-headquartered China Wireless Technologies Ltd. The company had entered into a marketing tie-up with Reliance for distributing its handsets in India in October 2009.

‘Coolpad' on Thursday launched three handsets including its first android-based CDMA and a triple-SIM enabled one. All three handsets have been priced between Rs 3,400 and Rs 8,000.

Facilities

According to Mr AlLawanti, the handset maker is also planning to set up a research and development (R&D) centre in India by December 2012 at an investment of Rs 100 crore. The centre would either come up in Delhi or Mumbai. This will be the company's first R&D unit outside China. The centre would not only cater to the Indian market, but would also help the company in its global expansion plans, he added. Also on cards is the setting up of a manufacturing unit in another three to four years time.
