San Francisco-based Dolby, has tied up with Taiwan-based electronics maker Acer to bring its patented sound technology to smartphones and some laptops. As a part of this, Dolby’s Home Theatre v4 and Advanced v2 technology will be available to users of Acer’s laptops, ultrabooks and Iconia branded tablets.
These will be available in select Acer branded retail stores and in Croma, Reliance Retail and Vijay Sales stores across India. However, according to S Rajendran, Chief Marketing Officer of Acer, Dolby technology will not be available to netbooks and some entry level laptops.
Pankaj Kedia, Country Manager of Dolby Laboratories India told Business Line, "With Acer, we aim to address the growing demand for HD content delivered across a wide range of devices.”
Dolby specialises in audio noise reduction technology and licenses its technology to consumer electronics makers.
According to industry observers, Dolby is trying to capitalise on the increasing amount of High Definition (HD) content that is made available by television channels in India. Also, according to Dolby officials, consumers are watching entertainment in different devices and are not confined to TVs.
