Researchers at Durham’s Duke University have developed a camera called AWARE-2, which can take 1,000 mega pixel pictures.

While this technology will initially be used by the military — it is funded by the US Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency — researchers are confident that it will have civilian uses.

Each camera costs around $1 lakh today, but researchers say prices may soon come down to $1,000.

Overall usage of smartphones for shooting pictures is growing. For instance, on the photo sharing site Flickr, the most popular camera is the iPhone 4, which is listed above the Canon EOS 5D Mark II and the Nikon D90.
