Online marketplace eBay posted a 14-per-cent rise in third-quarter revenues on Wednesday thanks to a rise in mobile sales, but a disappointing forecast for the holiday season sent the company’s shares down in after hours trading.
The company said sales grew to $3.89 billion from $3.4 billion a year ago. Profits rose 15 per cent to $689 million.
Sales at the company’s PayPal unit rose 19 per cent, as total payments grew 25 per cent to $44 billion. The total value of commerce on eBay grew 21 per cent for the quarter to $52 billion. The big bright spot was mobile commerce, which jumped 75 per cent from a year earlier. The company said its app has been downloaded over 200 million times.
“We delivered strong third-quarter results, with mobile driving a significant portion of our new-user growth and continuing to transform how consumers shop and pay around the world,” said chief executive John Donahue in a statement.
The company forecast fourth-quarter sales of between $4.5 billion and $4.6 billion, slightly below analyst expectations, sending shares down over 4 per cent in after-hours trading.
