Top three e-commerce companies in the country Flipkart, Amazon and Snapdeal, which had suspended their services in the flood-hit Chennai during the last seven days, will resume their operations in the next few days.
Several e-commerce sites had suspended the delivery service to customers following massive flooding in Chennai because of heavy rains. A Flipkart spokesperson said the company has started clearing the backlog. Once it gets cleared, it will start accepting orders again.
The spokesperson, however, did not disclose the loss incurred by the e-commerce company. “Tamil Nadu and the Chennai region form an important market for us as it constitutes about 10 per cent of Flipkart's sales volumes… In the next couple of days, we will be delivering full-scale to all our customers in these regions.”
Amazon India’s spokesperson too confirmed that the services had been suspended. “Due to the rains last week, we had to temporarily suspend our operations in some parts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, as well as Puducherry and Port Blair.,” she said.
Amazon has, however, resumed most of its operations this week in the impacted areas and would be fully operational shortly. The company has one fulfilment centre in Chennai.
Snapdeal is also expected to resume all its services shortly.
Chennai is one of the biggest centres for all the e-commerce companies in India. It is not only a big market for these companies but also a major sourcing centre, the spokesperson for Flipkart said.
