For a fee, Maharashtra may allow Aadhaar enrolment at your doorstep

You could soon enrol for an Aadhaar card without stepping out of your home, if an ambitious plan of the Maharashtra Government clicks.

The State’s Department of IT, in consultation with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), is exploring the possibility of conducting the enrolment at home if you are willing to pay a premium, said Maharashtra’s Information Technology Secretary Rajesh Aggarwal.

“We are toying with the concept at the moment. The idea is to have Aadhaar enrolment machines mounted on motorcycles so that we can go to the doorsteps of those who cannot venture out for registrations. The service will also be extended to senior citizens and the differently-abled, but we may not charge them,” Aggarwal said in an informal chat with presspersons.

Currently, enrolment can happen only at designated places such as enrolment centres and co-operative housing societies. In the past, the State has setup special camps for leprosy patients and transgenders, he added.

Maharashtra has deployed over 4,000 Aadhaar card machines across the State.

Gets nod

Sources say that the proposal has received a green signal from UIDAI Chairman Nandan Nilekani.

Aggarwal and his team at the DIT are in the process of finalising the pricing strategy for this initiative.

If the initiative takes off, Maharashtra will become the first State in the country to offer personalised enrolment services, he said.

The biggest hiccup, Aggarwal says, is the lack of keenness among the mandated registration agencies to implement this proposal.

In fact, the DIT has not ruled out doing a pilot project on its own before roping in other agencies.
