Foxconn eyes Karnataka to set up start-up incubator

Foxconn, a $131.8-billion Taiwanese electronics giant, with an aim to set up a few start-up incubators is exploring Karnataka and other States.

A team of officials from Foxconn has already met Karnataka government officials’ couple of days ago. The company is planning to invest in areas such as services, mobile internet, e-commerce and hardware technologies.

K Ratna Prabha, Karnataka Additional Chief Secretary, Commerce and Industries Department, confirmed the development to

BusinessLine and said that “One of them (a senior company official) met me some time back. He said he would come back in a week.”

Last week, Foxconn officials visited Bengaluru to meet industry bodies and few companies.

The Taiwanese company is busy making plans to set up about 10 manufacturing plants in India and has been visiting potential states to check out the infrastructure available to take a suitable decision. Foxconn is also exploring an option of partnership with local companies and start-ups in India to set up a manufacturing base. Besides Apple’s iPhone and iPad, the company manufactures products such as the BlackBerry, Kindle, PlayStation and Xbox One.

Industry sources said the company has already met top Indian entrepreneurs to explore joint investment opportunities.

Last week, senior company officials met the founders of 30 start-ups, including healthcare firm Practo, automotive start-up Ather Energy and online furniture store Urban Ladder.

The senior management also met Flipkart founder Sachin Bansal and Mukesh Bansal to understand the market.
