Apple has scored a memorable hit with its new Gold Phone 5S — the first time the company has made a gold-coloured phone.
Models of the scarce device sold out within minutes of the launch on Friday at Apple stores around the world, prompting a massive clamour for the model on secondary sites such as eBay.com and Craigslist.
According to the auction history for one unlocked 16GB 5S, a buyer bid $10,000 in a sale that attracted 51 bids. However it is possible that the auction was a hoax. since hundreds of other eBay auctions offered similar devices for around $1,000, which itself was a hefty mark-up on the official price on Apple’s website of $649.
Apple sold a record 9 million units of the iPhone 5S and the cheaper iPhone 5C on its weekend launch. Apple’s website says that gold-coloured iPhones will be available for shipping next month.
Other colours of the new iPhone were also in short supply, but the biggest demand was for gold.
