Miriam Makeba was a Grammy Award winning South African singer. She was born on March 4, 1932, and is known for her song Pata Pata. She is regarded as the first artist from South Africa to popularise African music globally.
In 1966, she received the Grammy for the Best Folk Recording along with Harry Belafonte for An Evening with Belafonte / Makeba.
She was also a civil rights campaigner and campaigned against apartheid in South Africa. The South African Government cancelled her passport when she was abroad. She returned to South Africa after Nelson Mandela was released.
Miriam Makeba died on November 9, 2008, in Italy after a concert organised to support writer Roberto Saviano.
