The Government, on Thursday, lifted the 15-day ban on bulk SMS and MMS with immediate effect.

Sources from the Home Ministry said mobile users can now send messages and MMS according to their service provider’s limits.

The ban was imposed on August 18 to check spread of rumours through SMS and MMS on the violence in Assam that led to people from the North-East rushing out of Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai and Pune.

Initially, a limit of five SMS a day was set. Then, on August 23, the Government increased the number to 20 a day.

“The lifting of the ban will allow the digital media companies to legitimately get their businesses back. Losses to these companies were also not 100 per cent and customers also did not suffer much,” said Subho Ray, President, Internet and Mobile Association of India.
