Hewlett-Packard India continues to maintain its lead in the A4 printers market with 49 per cent of the total market that imported more than 3.8 lakh units in the first quarter (January-march) this year.

Canon with 16 per cent and Epson at 13 per cent followed HP during the period, a CyberMedia Research report said on Friday.

In the overall categories, the country imported 7.81 lakh units during the quarter, an increase of 2 per cent as compared to corresponding quarter last year (7.68 lakh units in Q1 2012), it said.

The report said shipments of multi-function printers (MFPs) to India have overtaken shipments for single function printers for the first time.

The contribution of single function printers in the market dropped from 53 per cent to 49 per cent in the January-March quarter.

“The scale of print has become the key determinant for the choice of printer technology. Government and Enterprise segments have started adopting MFPs as these offer greater ease of use and help to consolidate multiple devices,” Sumanta Mukherjee, Lead Analyst, CMR InfoTech & Channels Practices, said.

He said more demand of mid-level inkjet MFPs has started to increase compared to laser single function printers and the key reason for that is because cost per page for inkjet printers continues to register a decline.
