With incessant rains battering Hyderabad over the last one week, Nasscom has asked IT and BPO companies to consider letting their employees work from home.

“We have been informed that heavy rains are expected over the next two days in Telangana. The State government has suggested that work from home may be considered, wherever feasible, for two days,” Srikanth Srinivasan, Regional Head of Nasscom, said in the IT lobby’s advisory to members.

“This is an advisory in the interest and safety of all concerned and organisations may take a call based on their business requirements,” he said.

While taking stock of the situation with civic authorities on Thursday night, Telangana IT Minister KT Rama Rao asked IT companies to consider either giving a holiday or letting their employees work from home, keeping in view the traffic hold-ups in the city.

Commuting to and from offices has become very difficult over the last week with heavy rains resulting in water logging at several places.

Unabated rainfall has damaged road infrastructure, forcing vehicles to move very slowly. The Education Department has directed closure of schools in the twin cities to save students the traffic hassle. This helped in easing congestion in some areas. Traffic woes, however, continued along the Dilsukhnagar-KPHB Colony and Begumpet-Secunderabad stretches.

Widespread rains across the State have resulted in heavy losses to crops. Preliminary estimates said crops planted on over 25,000 hectares were inundated, causing huge losses to farmers.

Forecast The worst, however, is not over. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall in some places across Telangana, including Hyderabad, in the next four days.
