IBM today said that it is No. 1 in the Indian non-x86 Unix server market in terms of revenues in the January-March 2012 quarter, according to research firm IDC.

The world's largest technology company continued to dominate the non-x86 Unix server market, with a 51 per cent market share in terms of revenue at a time when the overall India server market degrew 8.7 per cent in revenues.

x86 is a microprocessor based on Intel’s standards used in PCs and servers and generally runs on Unix operating system.

In the overall server market, IBM captured 31.5 per cent market share in terms of factory revenues and grew 2.6 per cent when compared to the first quarter of 2011. “Our clients are migrating from their legacy Unix/Linux infrastructure to Power servers on Unix and Linux.

We continue to focus on growth programmes for our Business Partners and ISVs, specifically targeting the SMB and mid-market segment for Power 7,’’ said Viswanath Ramaswamy, Country Leader- Power Systems, Systems and Technology Group, IBM India South Asia.

IBM’s Power 7 servers form the backbone of large mission critical banking and telecom solutions and are now extended to SMB and mid-market clients.

IBM’s market share in the external disk storage segment in the first quarter of 2012 stood at 22.1 per cent. Its Storwize V7000 range of storage solutions targeted at mid-sized companies grew 40 per cent year-over-year when compared to the first quarter of 2011.

“Indian companies are increasingly virtualising their storage. Utility based models are making way for Storage-as-a-Service. Capabilities such as compression and de-duplication are helping organisations remain competitive and cost-effective,” said Subroto Das, Vice-President, Storage Business, IBM India, South Asia.
