While globally the fall in PC sales is linked to the post-PC era dominated by tablets, this has nothing to do with the fact that there was a 6.5 per cent dip in the sales of desktops and laptops for the December 2011 quarter as compared to the December 2010 quarter, said a Gartner analyst. “The post-PC scenario is not valid in India because PC penetration is very low in India,” said Mr Vishal Tripathi, Principal Research Analyst at Gartner.
Around 2.5 million units were sold in the December 2011 quarter, with Dell getting the top share of 15.5 per cent, followed by Lenovo (13.1 per cent), HP (12.4 per cent) and Acer (12.1 per cent).
According to Mr Tripathi, many reasons could be attributed for the fall in PC sales. For one thing, the December quarter is a festival-driven and consumer-based quarter.
Additionally, he said, the industry had to contend with the fluctuation in the dollar, and to top it all, there was a shortage of hard-disk drives because of the Thailand floods, which had a detrimental impact on desktops.
