Investment at the Nokia SEZ at Sriperumbudur has touched $500 million.
While Nokia has invested $300 million, its suppliers have invested the rest, according to Mr Prakash Katama, Director of Chennai’s Factory Operations.
“We have invested more than what we have committed to the Tamil Nadu Government,” he said at a strategic meet organised by Nokia here.
Nokia has orinally planned to invest $150 million, and then ramped it up to $300 million.
The telecom park, which was the first to come up in India in 2006, today employs nearly 30,000. Of this, about 8,000 are working with Nokia and the rest with its supplieers, he said. Suppliers for the Finnish major include Salcomp and Perlos.
Mr Katama said that Nokia has so far rolled out 600 million mobile phones from the Sriperumbudur plant. Of this nearly 60 per cent was export and sent to nearly 70 countries.
