The information technology companies have hired maximum number of engineering graduates in campus placements this year.
Compared to last year, there has been improvement in number of people hired as well as the average compensation, as per the data from some of the leading private engineering colleges in the State capital.
``The IT companies were the major recruiters this year. About 89 per cent of jobs have been offered by IT majors,’’ Mr N L N Reddy, Placements Officer, Chaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology told Business Line here.
Out of 660 students, who participated in campus-placements, Cognizant and Wipro hired 410 and 205 students respectively. ``Every student has got two jobs,’’ Mr Reddy said.
The data from other colleges such as Vignana Jyothi Institute of Technology (VJIT) and J.B. Institute of Engineering Technology (JBIET) also show similar trends.
About 275 students were hired by Tata Consultancy Services in CBIT, its Placements Head Mr Parthasarathy said.
Most of the colleges had expected even higher recruitment till August last year. ``But, the downward trend in economy must have stopped some IT firms from hiring in big numbers,’’ he added.
According to Mr J Bhaskar Rao, Chairman, J.B. Group which runs JBIET, apart from IT, automobile sector too shown good hiring.
``Global automobile giant Renault Nissan also visited JBIET for placements. Workshops of Toyota and Mercedes were also conducted,’’ he added.
But, in general, the recruitment by non-IT companies were only few in number, as per the individual recruitment data provided by the colleges.
Most of the infrastructure companies had also deferred hiring due to prevailing economic situation, Mr Parthasarathy said.
The average salary increased by about 10 per cent compared to last year and in the range of Rs 3.05 lakh to Rs 3.25 lakh per annum.
There were, however, some exceptions. Microsoft hired an engineering graduate from CBIT with annual package of 10.50 lakh.
