With top IT firms beginning to tap business opportunities beyond the traditional IT services, the Nasscom is going to tell the world to take notice of the transformational change in the IT industry.

As the IT firms turn their attention to outcome-based projects with far greater involvement in the business planning of the clients, the apex IT association is planning to educate the global businesses on the value addition they can expect from the Indian firms.

“Indian IT and BPO industry is much beyond the traditional services. It has evolved from mere supplying of human resources to outsourcing, and then to time-and-material. The clients are asking them to take up outcome based tasks,” R Chandrasekhar, President of National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom), has said.

The industry, which is eyeing a revenue target of $165-169 billion in 2015-16, gets 62 per cent of business from the US and 17 per cent from the United Kingdom. “The clients in the US and UK markets are more or less are aware of our newer strengths. But there is a necessity to tell markets like Japan, Korea, China and Europe about the IT industry moving up the value chain,” he said.

Talking to reporters on the sidelines of the annual conference of HYSEA (Hyderabad Software Exporters’ Association) here on Thursday, he said the industry was roping in doctors, lawyers and several other professionals,” he said.

Job additions

He said the industry, whose employee pyramids are undergoing severe pressure as a result of automation, is going to add 2.3 lakh jobs in 2015-16, seven per cent more than last year’s head count of 32.90 lakhs.

“The growth rate in jobs is roughly about half of the IT industry’s growth rate. But the number is still growing,” he said.

He, however, asked the job seekers and employees to constantly acquire newer skills. “IT industry is the most competitive industry globally. It can’t hold someone who is not technically equipped,” he said.

Cyber security Task Force

The Nasscom will form a small group that will discuss and finalise a Task Force on cyber security. Acting on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s advice recently, the association would start its work on the panel next month.
