With competition hotting up in the high-end mobile phone segment, electronics major LG will roll-out its 3D phone and tablet phone in its Optimus series in India in the next 3-4 months. The tablet phone, with Honeycomb 2.3 version, might cost about Rs 30,000.
The roll-out planned for this year would have 35 phones, which includes about a dozen 3G-ready phones, as the company plans to increase market share to 10 per cent from the present 8 per cent. It presently has a range of 40 phones.
“Smart phones have a market-share of 3-4 per cent in the Rs 25,000-crore mobile handset market. This is going to reach 15-17 per cent by the end of 2011. In terms of units, the total market in India is put at 10 crore with an average cost-per unit of Rs 2,500. Demand would significantly increase in the smart phones in the sub-Rs 10,000-crore segment,” Mr Vishal Chopra, Business Head (Mobile Communications) of LG Electronics, said.
Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, he said the upcoming smart phones would be in the range of Rs 8,900 to Rs 35,000.
In order to meet the demand, the company decided to increase the capacity from 70 lakh units a year to one crore units at its Pune facility by adding two more lines. Last year, it invested Rs 34 crore on expansion of manufacturing capacity.
