Mindtree employee Prabha Arun Kumar, in her early 40s, was stabbed to death on her way back home from work late last night by an unknown assailant.
According to the local police, she was attacked just 300 metres away from her home, in a public walkway in Parrametta Park, Westmead, a suburb in Sydney.
The mother of a nine-year-old daughter who is studying in fifth grade in Bengaluru, was reportedly talking to her husband when she was stabbed.
She was found lying in a pool of blood at around 9.30 p.m. on Saturday night. Prabha’s husband Arun Kumar was put on board the first available flight to Sydney at 1.30 a.m. on Sunday.
Prabha has been working with Mindtree for almost 10 years, prior to which she was employed with Linc Software which Mindtree acquired in May 2005.
She was sent by Mindtree to work on a project in Sydney for the last three years and was to have returned to Bengaluru on completion of the project this May.
On being asked why she was not provided with office transport after having worked late, a Mindtree official told BusinessLine that, “Public transport is excellent there. She normally takes the metro from office to Parrametta station and then walks home from there. We are co-operating with the police and local authorities to make sure that her husband can bring back her body after completing all the necessary formalities. Our Australia country head is doing everything in his power to bring the body back as soon as possible.”
