Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd's losses have increased to Rs 863 crore during the second quarter ended September 30, 2011 compared with a loss of Rs 604 crore in the corresponding period last year.
Net income from operations was also down to Rs 860 crore compared with Rs 1,053 crore in the same quarter previous year.
MTNL blamed the dismal performance on being restricted to offering services in Delhi and Mumbai, which are already saturated. The company also said that last year it had received Rs 181 crore for a project undertaken for the Commonwealth Games, which was not available for the second quarter of the current fiscal.
