The US embassy in India has clarified that US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner’s statement on visas for Indians did not imply an increase in the quota for Indian applicants.
Several Indian newspapers, including Business Line , had reported on Wednesday that the US Treasury Secretary expected a significant increase in visa for Indians. However, according to the US Embassy, Geithner actually said, “If you look at the numbers, just to refer to the visa issue you raised, India is a major participant in those programs, and the recent numbers are encouraging. They show significant further growth in that area. And, of course, underscore again how much we welcome the greater participation of Indian companies and Indian talent in our economy.”
This response had come when he was asked to give his views on entire visa issue as Indian companies were feeling jittery about the US’ growing protectionist stance.
