Mobile Number Portability (MNP) requests increased to 45.89 million at the end of April from 41.88 million subscribers in March.
In April alone, 4.01 million requests have been made for MNP, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) said on Wednesday.
The number of telephone subscribers in India increased to 952.91 million at the end of April from 951.34 million at the end of March, thereby registering a growth rate of 0.16 per cent.
Subscription in urban areas declined from 620.53 million in March to 618.92 million in April. However, subscription in rural areas increased from 330.82 million to 334 million during the same period.
The overall urban tele-density has decreased from 169.55 to 168.83 and rural tele-density increased from 39.22 to 39.57.
Share of urban subscribers has declined to 64.95 per cent from 65.23 per cent, whereas share of rural subscribers has increased to 35.05 per cent in the month of April, said TRAI.
With this, the overall tele-density in India reached to 78.71 at the end of April from 78.66 of the previous month.
Total wireless subscriber base increased to 921.02 million in April from 919.17 million in March, registering a growth of 0.20 per cent.
Wireless subscription in urban areas decreased from 595.90 million in March to 594.45 million in April. The subscription in rural areas increased from 323.27 million to 326.57 million during the same period, it said.
Private operators hold 88.76 per cent of the wireless market share whereas public sector operators Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd, hold 11.24 per cent market share.
Total broadband subscriber base has increased from 13.79 million in March to 13.95 million in April, a monthly growth of 1.13 per cent.
As of April 30, there are 156 Internet service providers with BSNL having nine million; Bharti Airtel 1.36 million; and MTNL having 1.05 million subscribers, respectively.
