Companies claim that vendors give discounts, not them

The Centre has set up a grievance redressal mechanism to look into complaints made against e-commerce companies.

This follows a representation made by brick-and-mortar retailers to the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) against e-retailers giving advertisements in the media announcing sales and offering discounts.

Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said the redressal system will be set up on the lines of the ministry’s Twitter Seva.

“Officials from the Consumer Affairs Ministry will be on board and a nodal officer will direct the grievances to the officials concerned,” Sitharaman said addressing the media on Tuesday.

“Some companies responded saying they are not giving those discounts. They claimed they work on a marketplace model, and that the vendorson their platforms were the ones giving discount,” Sitharaman said.
