India’s largest online market Flipkart has claimed to have sold half a million mobile handsets on the third day of its Big Billion Sale.
The company, which was selling only mobile phones on the third day, said this was a record for the highest number of mobile phones sold in India in a short period of ten hours on any platform, either online or offline.
It added that the 75 per cent of the phones sold during this period were 4G-enabled. Flipkart is offering deals on phones at almost every price point.
Keeping the interest of consumers in mind and in a bid to have a smooth flow of traffic to its site, Flipkart has divided the Big Billion Days sale into 5 days and categories.
Major citiesWhile metros like Bengaluru, Delhi and Mumbai were the leading cities in terms of sales, Flipkart also saw a huge surge in interest from Tier-2 cities with Nagpur, Indore, Coimbatore, Vishakhapatnam and Jaipur leading in sales.
Sales were driven by attractive exchange offers and easy EMI options. About 50 per cent of customers availed the bank offers, the company said.
Mukesh Bansal, Head of Commerce Platform, Flipkart, said: “It has been a blockbuster beginning for our mobile category sale. The Indian mobile revolution has truly come of age and the half a million mobile handsets sale record is truly a testament to the growing demand for smartphones.”
Mobile categoryMobiles and accessories is one of the biggest categories for any e-commerce player in terms of sales, after apparels. Flipkart’s rival Snapdeal, which had its Electronics Monday sale a day prior to Big Billion, said that it saw massive sales across segments, but that its smartphones sales got the best response.
Snapdeal claimed that the ‘Electronics Monday Sale’ exceeded its expectation, with an overwhelming response from customers across the country. It saw a 17-fold increase in sales, 10-fold increase in volumes and 5-fold increase in users. It sold ‘5 mobile phones per second’ in brands like Xiaomi, Micromax, Yu, Samsung and Apple.
Rahul Taneja, Vice-President (Category Management), Snapdeal, said: “The tremendous support from our sellers enabled us to provide attractive deals and really solid discounts, which resulted in this phenomenal response we have received. We are well on track to reach $100 million sales on our Electronics Monday Sale.”
