Twitter will now allow users to play podcasts, music and other audio clips direct from their timelines for the first time, the microblogging site has said.

The social networking site has added a new feature to allow its users to listen music directly from the twitter stream on mobile devices.

“The world’s most influential musicians and media producers already share unique audio content through Twitter every day. Today we’re introducing a new way for you to experience audio directly on Twitter,” Twitter said in a blog post.

With a single tap, the Twitter Audio Card lets users discover and listen to audio directly in their timeline on both iOS and Android devices, the firm said.

Throughout their listening experience, users can dock the Audio Card and keep listening as they continue to browse inside the Twitter app.

“We’re launching this new audio card in partnership with third-party streaming services,” Twitter said.

The first partner for streaming on Twitter is Berlin-based audio-streaming service SoundCloud.

For starters, Twitter has promised audio from SoundCloud’s partners, which include diverse sources such as NASA, BBC World Service, White House, David Guetta and Coldplay.

“We’re just beginning to test the Audio Card and plan to make it available to more partners and creators in the future so that many more musical artists and creators will be able to share exclusive, in-the-moment audio to millions of listeners on Twitter,” it added.
