Sony India may resort to price hikes for laptops, television sets and cameras, if the rupee falls further.
Sony officials, however, said there is no plan for price escalation in June.
Mr Sachin Thapar, Head IT and Mobile Division, said: “If there is a further fall in the rupee; we might explore options of a price hike. If, however, there is an appreciation of the rupee we are open to reducing prices.”
He was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the launch of the new range of Sony Vaio laptops here.
A major importer of products, Sony has not increased camera prices since the last festival season.
However, it has put up the prices of the recently launched laptops by 10-15 per cent (costlier by Rs 2,000-4,000) across models.
The rupee rise started in August last year and averaged Rs 54.38 to a dollar in May. The average in June so far is Rs 55.45 to a dollar.
In an e-mailed response, Mr Masaru Tamagawa, Managing Director, Sony India, told Business Line: “The company has hedged the currency by booking the exchange rate amount till June. It, therefore, has no plans to increase the price of its products till then.”
“However, from July onwards, Sony will observe the exchange rate closely and determine the price accordingly. The rupee depreciation is likely to affect the consumer electronics market,” he added.
