Food ordering and delivery platform Swiggy announced that it has acqui-hired Bengaluru-based gourmet Asian food start-up 48East, founded by food industry veterans Joseph Cherian and Nabhojit Ghosh.
Started in August 2016, 48East offers a new menu every week, operates five kitchens, processes 9,000 orders a month and serves over a dozen areas in Bengaluru.
“With their deep understanding of the food space and an impressive track record of delivering a great consumer experience, the 48East team will equip Swiggy with additional capabilities. We are excited to work with them towards our vision of changing the way India eats,” said Sriharsha Majety, CEO, Swiggy.
New supply businessCherian and Ghosh will join Swiggy’s ‘New Supply’ business line. As COO of the New Supply business, Cherian’s 20 plus years of expertise in the food infrastructure space is expected to strengthen Swiggy’s focus on solving for gaps in consumer supply through various initiatives like the recently launched Swiggy Access.
Swiggy Access is the first initiative under the ‘New Supply’ business line through which the company brings a variety of food to consumers by enabling plug-and-play expansion for restaurant partners in different areas. Over the next six months, Swiggy plans to introduce 40 restaurant partners to newer neighbourhoods across the country through Swiggy Access.
Cherian will report to Vishal Bhatia, who was appointed CEO for the ‘New Supply’ business line last week. Bhatia comes with 19 years of experience in Reckitt Benckiser, PepsiCo and Britannia.
Last month, Swiggy expanded its operations to Ahmedabad. It already operates in Mumbai, Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru, Chennai, Pune, Hyderabad and Kolkata.
With operations in eight cities along with 20,000 active restaurant partners, Swiggy’s delivery fleet of 20,000 people handle four million orders a month.
