Mobiles and tablets are the most searched and bought products in the Indian online space, with 80 per cent of the mobiles sold priced below Rs 5,000.
Growth in tablets outpaced mobiles by three times with tablets sales growing at 33 per cent month-on-month as compared with mobiles sales growth at 11 per cent month-on-month, according to a study by Snapdeal.com, an online marketplace.
About 95 per cent of the tablets sold were priced below Rs 10,000, it said, adding almost 50 per cent of mobile and tablet sales came from tier-I cities.
Android was the most preferred operating system in tablets with a 94 per cent market share, while Symbian (46 per cent) and Android (44 per cent) were the most preferred operating systems on mobile phones.
The study is based on sales and traffic seen on Snapdeal.com over a three-month period (July 2012–September 2012).
According to the study, customers now prefer Smartphones over Feature Phones, with the former accounting for 23 per cent of the online market share on Snapdeal.com.
The top five mobile phone brands are Micromax, Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and HTC.
In the low price (below Rs 10,000) tablets category, Micromax has emerged as the leader with the brand’s Funbook range being the highest selling as well as the most searched tablet on Snapdeal.com.
Indian tablet brands such as Zync, Penta and Intex are now finding greater acceptability amongst online shoppers on Snapdeal.com.
The camera is no longer an ancillary feature in mobile phones, the study said, adding, the sale of mobile phones with cameras grew by a 100 per cent while that of mobile phones without cameras dropped by 32 per cent.
