Global telecom industry body TIA has sought support from Indian equipment makers association TEMA in opposing the preferential market policy announced by New Delhi recently.
In February, the Government had approved a proposal to give preference to domestically manufactured electronic goods in its procurement programme.
The preference not only applies to the government but also on other purchases which have security implications for the country. In a letter, the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) President, Mr Grant Seiffert, has asked Mr Ashok Aggarwal, TEMA's Honorary Director-General, to oppose the preferential market access (PMA) rules.
Mr Seiffert said the PMA will undermine the provision of affordable telecom services in India and called on TEMA to join in opposing India's preferential market policy.
