The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has asked the Department of Telecom to specify the category of licences for which an exit policy needs to be formulated.
The DoT had sought TRAI's recommendations on an exit policy for telecom companies. While it was believed that the policy was aimed at new 2G players which want to surrender their licences, TRAI wants the DoT to clearly specify this.
A number of new players have not been able to start services due to the ongoing investigation around the 2G scam. The DoT has issued notices to cancel licences of some of these players for missing roll out targets, there are others who not started services even after 3 years. The DoT had sought TRAI's views on how such players can be given an exit route.
In response, TRAI had intimated that being a new reference, the authority will need to carry out a consultation with stakeholders. The recommendations on the subject will be sent in due course to the Government, according to an internal communication.
