Uninor, the Indian subsidiary of Norway's Telenor, today announced that it has appointed Yogesh Malik as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the operating company with immediate effect. Sigve Brekke will continue to be responsible for all of Telenor affairs in India as the Head of Telenor Group’s Asian Operations.

Malik had joined the Company as Chief Operating Officer (COO) in 2011. He is credited with developing Uninor's low cost business model, which has been adopted by Telenor's operations in other countries. "His focus on operational efficiency and innovations that benefit the mass market has contributed to making Uninor India’s fastest growing service provider,” said Sigve Brekke.

“Our clear ambition for the future is to continue taking market share by being recognised as the most attractive choice for mobile services in India”, said Yogesh Malik

“I believe that our strong operational focus and continued pursuit of efficiency within our own organisation gives us a competitive advantage that allows us to further strengthen and develop our commitment of being the most affordable service provider in India," Malik said.

He has previously held executive positions at Telenor Group headquarter in Norway, and he has served as Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Telenor Group Companies in Ukraine and Bangladesh.

In parallel to being Manager Director of Uninor, Sigve Brekke has also held the position as Telenor Group Head of Asian Operations. Now that he steps down as MD of Uninor, he will continue to have overall responsibility for Telenor affairs in India as the Head of Region Asia and will formally take over as Chairman of Uninor once necessary regulatory clearances are secured.

“Taking responsibility for our Indian operations was always meant to be temporary, but with all the challenges that we faced, my period in India became longer than intended," said Sigve Brekke.
