GSM operators Vodafone India and Idea Cellular have reported a rise in the Revenue Market Share across major metros year-on-year.
Other than in Mumbai circle, Bharti Airtel’s Revenue Market Share dipped or remained flat in the metros of Kolkata, Chennai and Delhi, according to data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. Metros, according to industry analysts, are key revenue generating service areas for telecom operators, with stiff competition for the top slot.
“Idea Cellular led subscriber additions in the third quarter, while it also added a considerable number of users in the fourth quarter. Vodafone has been maintaining a steady pace of subscriber addition, while Airtel has been concentrating on 3G services,” Ankita Somani, sector analyst at Angel Broking, said.
In the Mumbai circle, Bharti Airtel’s RMS increased to 19.81 per cent in the first quarter of FY13 from 18.46 per cent in the corresponding period a year ago. However, in the Delhi circle, its RMS fell marginally to 36.16 per cent (June 2012) from 36.17 per cent (June 2011). The GSM operator’s RMS in the Tamil Nadu and Chennai circles fell to 31.69 per cent from 31.81 per cent. Revenue market share in the Kolkata circle fell to 26.77 per cent from 27.01 per cent in June 2011.
“Bharti is now getting aggressive on subscriber additions, and the company is making higher investments in its sales and marketing activities. The focus on subscriber addition is being reflected in the first quarter numbers,” Somani added.
