Software services major Wipro sees significant opportunities in the Indian government's push towards usage of open source software.
In a statement TK Kurien, Chief Executive Officer and Member of the Board, Wipro, said that the government's policy on open source adoption is a critical step towards building a digitally empowered society. "There is little doubt this initiative will usher in greater efficiency, transparency and reliability in India’s technology infrastructure besides creating significant employment opportunities over the medium to long term,” he added.
The government has repeatedly stressed the use of open source software in delivering citizen services and should be the cornerstone for 'Digital India', according to IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad who said this in a recent visit to Bengaluru. Wipro has identified open source as a core technology initiative and the company’s investments in building a large cadre of skilled personnel, including open source industry veterans and community experts, to cater to tech requirements in India and abroad. This practice will help its customers build Open Source-based platforms that enable online services on a higher scale, platforms that process big data and other kinds of services at beneficial price points, believe Wipro officials.
Industry watchers believe that the pace of adoption of open source software and methodologies led by advancements in analytics, cloud computing and the emerging Internet of Things (IoT) has been on the rise in the last few years as enterprises globally have been looking at software that can be used across different devices.
