Wipro on Friday soft-launched its “Power PC” that it says costs 20 per cent less than a laptop and the buyer can recover his money within 250 hours of running the computer that consumes 50 per cent less electricity.

The company, which launched Power PC in Bangalore on August 15, is now targeting Gujarat and Rajasthan, particularly the small and medium businesses (SMBs) in areas with erratic power supply as also the rural areas having frequent power failures.

Power PC, with a wireless keyboard and mouse, is a first of its kind desktop under the company’s SuperGenius range of computers that combines some of the features of a laptop with those of a desktop.

“It is a personal computer with inbuilt power backup of up to 120 minutes which also reduces power consumption by 50 per cent,” Dhavan Desai, Regional Business Head, Gujarat and Rajasthan, Wipro Infotech, told

Power gap

On an average many States have a power gap of at least 40 per cent than is required. The computers’ UPS can supply power only up to an hour. This hampers work and often causes loss of data. Wipro’s Power PC addresses these problems with a factory-integrated battery having a three-year warranty that is switched on automatically the moment power goes off. Moreover, this PC has a “cold start option” and can start even without electricity, he said.

Also, unlike normal desktops typically consuming 165 watts of power, this PC consumes only 65 watts. It is also less cluttered as only one cable connects the CPU, monitor and integrated power backup solution unlike a standard PC having separate cables for UPS, CPU and monitor.
