Wipro has launched a soft skills programme for under graduates from non-engineering colleges to address the issue of non-employability of fresh graduates. As a part of this initiative, Wipro will provide communication and soft skills training to improve students employability in the IT, BPO and service sectors. This has been introduced to the student community at Kolkata-based Techno India Group.
The 60-hour programme will consist of technology-backed modules in a self-paced format, that give students the flexibility to work through the modules over three monthsalong with their graduation. This programme consists of a ‘Business Communication Skills’ module provided by TaraSpan Solutions, a training organisation and a ‘Corporate Readiness’ module that has been developed by Wipro.
In addition to the e-learning modules, the program has periodic classroom connect programmes, wherein students can interact with trainers. The curriculum designing and training methodology is in line with Nasscom’s the IT-ITES Sector Skills Council (SSC).
Further, this will be extended to undergraduate students in the country, including smaller cities and rural towns and Wipro is targeting to train 5,000 students by the end of fiscal 2014, according to a company statement.
Additionally, tudents who successfully complete the programme will be awarded a certification after Wipro assesses it. The certification will enable them eligible for a placement at Wipro, if they are able to successfully clear even a single round of interview.
Talking about the initiative, Sandhya Chintala, Executive Director, Sector Skills Council, Nasscom, said: “For enhancing employability to role-specific requirements in the IT, BPO and other service sectors, it is imperative that companies, academic institutions and the government work closely towards improving the employability of Indian youth.”
It aims to improve the soft-skill based competencies, foster professional skills and thereby, enhance the employability of youth for various service sector domains, Subhasish Biswas, Head – Business Excellence, Wipro BPO, said.
