YouTube viewers went mainstream in their choice of content, with YoYo Honey Singh’s Brown Rang song emerging the most trending video of the year in India in 2012, the company said on Tuesday.

This year’s top trending videos and the most subscribed channels from India, shows that YouTube has truly gone mainstream in India with million of users watching songs, their favourite television shows and subscribing to channels to catch their favourite content.

Bollywood continued to rule the charts, with most watched songs and movie trailers on YouTube. Sports and language content also made their way to the top most subscribed channels.

This year has been a big year for YouTube globally and in India. Globally, users saw over four billion hours of video a month.

The company looked not just at views, but also shares, searches, likes and responses to identify the 10 videos that everybody was talking about in 2012.

On YouTube people don’t just view a popular video, they remix, share, and parody, building a fan community that extends far beyond the watch page.

“We took all of this into account to ensure we truly captured the ‘watercooler moments’ of the year,” the company said.

Millions of creators worldover are using YouTube channels to experiment with innovative forms of entertainment, explore their passions and interests, take creativity and pop culture to new levels, it added.
