Stock Market Highlights: Sensex, Nifty close flat; Hindalco, JSW Steel, Tata Steel gain over 3%

KPIT Technologies recorded a 20.1 per cent sequential rise in profits at Rs 134.4 crore in Q1. On a year-on-year(YoY) basis, profits jumped 56.9 per cent.

Revenue from operations stood at Rs 1097.6 crore, up by 60 per cent YoY. On a quarter-on-quarter(QoQ) basis, revenue was up by 7.8 per cent. In constant currency terms, revenue grew by 51 per cent YoY.

State Bank of India, HDFC Bank, Bank of Baroda and Axis Bank could be accounting for nearly 60 per cent fresh lending towards India Inc. They could be handing out loans to large corporates at rates extremely competitive, that the rest of the industry finds untenable to match.

According to sources, the price war which began in the corporate lending space back in September 2021 is barely showing signs of abatement.

“With the hike in repo rates since May 2022, lending rate to large corporates have moved in tandem, and to some extent we don’t have the crazy pricing war we saw till September 2022. But even at the current rates, there is stiff competition in the market, concentrated among a few players,” said a senior banker.

DLF is hopeful of ending the fiscal with a “surplus cash generation” on the back of improved collections and better demand for offerings. The company’s pre-sales guidance continues to be in the Rs12000 crore –13,000 crore range.

Larsen & Toubro’s consolidated net profit for the June quarter rose 46 per cent on year to Rs 2,493 crore, while revenue rose 34 per cent to Rs 47,882 crore, aided by the execution of a healthy opening order book in its projects and manufacturing portfolio. Both profit and revenue were above analyst estimates.

The board approved buying back 3.3 crore shares through the tender offer route for a maximum price of Rs 3000 per share and for a maximum consideration of Rs 10,000 crore.

The board also approved a special dividend of Rs 6 per share.

The Spandana Sphoorty Financial stock fell 4.11 per cent on the BSE on Tuesday to end at Rs 768.

The Hyderabad-based microlender announced a profit after tax of Rs 119 crore in the first quarter of the current financial year ended June 30, 2023. In the corresponding quarter of the previous fiscal, Spandana incurred a loss of Rs 220 crore as it wrote-off Rs 702 crore of portfolio.

From the Sensex pack, JSW Steel, Tata Steel, NTPC and UltraTech Cement emerged as major winners, closing the day with a gain of up to 3.33 per cent.

On the other hand, Asian Paints, ITC, L&T and SBI were the laggards, ending the session up to 3.95 per cent lower.

Of the 30 Sensex stocks, 14 closed the day in green, while on the 50-stock index Nifty 25 scrips ended with gains.

“Indian indices hovered along the flat line, waiting ahead for the crucial decision of Fed policy. Metal stocks rose due to China’s commitment to provide policy support to its realty sector, while utilities were up in anticipation of demand & improvement in operating margin,” said Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services.

India’s oil marketing companies (OMCs) could see their operating profit rebound to Rs 1 lakh crore this fiscal, compared with an average of about Rs 60,000 crore between FY17 and FY22, and thrice the last fiscal’s low of Rs 33,000 crore, per Crisil Ratings.

The higher profitability would help improve the sector’s credit metrics which had weakened significantly in the past few fiscals amid muted profitability and significant capital expenditure.

Hitachi Energy India Ltd (HEIL) on Tuesday posted a 79.85 per cent jump in net profit at Rs 2.41 crore in the April-June quarter of 2023-24, on account of higher income, per a PTI report.

It had posted a net profit of Rs 1.34 crore in the corresponding period of 2022-23, the company said in a regulatory filing.

The total income also increased to Rs 1,043 crore from Rs 991.32 crore in the year-ago quarter.

Expenses soared to Rs 1,039.62 crore in the first quarter of FY24, as against Rs 989.21 crore a year ago.

Tata Motors on Tuesday reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 3,300.65 crore in the first quarter ended June 30, 2023, per a PTI report.

The company had posted a consolidated net loss of Rs 4,950.97 crore in the same quarter last fiscal, Tata Motors said in a regulatory filing.

The rupee pared initial gains to settle 7 paise lower at 81.88 against the American currency on Tuesday, as elevated crude oil prices and a muted trend in domestic equities weighed on investor sentiments.

Forex traders said the strengthening of the American currency in the overseas market further dented investor sentiments.

Benchmark equity indices Sensex and Nifty ended almost flat in a see-saw trade on Tuesday as investors traded cautiously, awaiting cues from the US Federal Reserve’s policy stance.

Foreign fund outflows and elevated level of crude oil prices also weighed on the investor sentiment, traders said.

The 30-share BSE Sensex slipped 29.07 points or 0.04 per cent to settle at 66,355.71. During the day, it touched an intra-day peak of 66,559.29 and hit the lowest level of 66,177.62.

The NSE Nifty inched up by 8.25 points or 0.04 per cent to end at 19,680.60. The broader index moved between the range of 19,729.35 and 19,615.95.

Net gold imports from China via Hong Kong fell by 29 per cent to 38.39 tonnes in June compared to May, according to figures from the Hong Kong Census and Statistics Department,

According to the statistics, net imports into the country with the highest consumption of gold totaled to 34.65 tonne in June as against 49.06 tonne in May.

Aluminium futures on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), which faced a resistance at ₹204 on July 14, fell in the subsequent sessions. This week, On Monday, the contract marked a low of ₹194.45 and has now rebounded to the current level of ₹198.

Thus, the support at ₹195 prevented a decline beyond that level. However, the broader trend remains bearish and for the short-term, the price action suggests that aluminium futures could stay in the ₹195-202 range.

Consolidated revenue from operations stood at Rs 1,334.5 crore in Q1, up 6.3 per cent compared to the same period last fiscal, driven by the delivery channel sales.

The spices complex on NCDEX was a tad cool on Tuesday. Dhaniya (coriander) September futures were Rs 36 lower at Rs 7,900 a quintal. Jeera (cumin) September contracts dropped Rs 15 to Rs 61,005 a quintal. Turmeric December futures slipped by Rs 70 to Rs 13,960 a quintal.

The stock of Tiger Logistics (India) trades at ₹385.25 on the BSE, up by 0.17%. The company had signed a pact with online loan marketplace OneNDF to facilitate collateral-free cargo value financing for SME exporters.

Ramkrishna Forgings Limited witnessed a 5 per cent surge in its share price following the board of directors’ approval for the acquisition Multitech Auto Private Limited and its wholly owned subsidiary Mal Metallics Private Limited.

Adani Wilmar, which recently forayed into the whole wheat segment, is betting big on the premiumisation and personalisation trends in this category. Under its whole wheat range, the company is offering varieties such as Sharbati, Poorna 1544, Lokwan, and MP Grade 1.

Bank Nifty index is trading flat. After opening with a wide gap-up, the index failed to sustain higher. It has come down sharply from its intraday high of 46,156. The index is currently at 45,944, up 0.04 per cent.

The advance/decline ratio at 4:8 broadly indicates weakness. AU Small Finance Bank is the worst performer in the index. The stock is down 1.14 per cent. HDFC Bank, up 0.77 per cent, is outperforming.

Tata Steel’s share price dips by 0.39 per cent as Q1FY24 net profit takes a steep plunge due to lower production amid planned shutdowns in Europe, facing a 6 per cent revenue growth decline.

Nifty 50 (19,670) and Sensex (66,330) are trading flat now after opening with a gap-up.

That said, the market breadth is showing a bullish bias. For instance, the advance/decline ratio of Nifty 50 stands at 29/21. Besides, the mid-and small-cap indices are in the green and the volatility has imploded today. The volatility index – India VIX – has crashed nearly 9 per cent to 10.70 level.

The stock of AstraZeneca Pharma rises by 1.22%, trading at ₹3,815.95. The company had received approval from the Drugs Controller General of India to import heart failure treatment drug Dapagliflozin tablets.

Gold ruling steady at $1,960 an ounce as investors await the US and European Central Bank’s decision on interest rates later this week. In Asian trade, gold was trading at $1,961.05 an ounce. Silver was quoted at $24.51 an ounce.

On MCX, gold August futures are up Rs 77 at Rs 59,193 per 10 gm. Silver September contracts are up by Rs 333 at Rs 74,429 a kg.

The rupee gained 14 paise to 81.67 against the US dollar in early trade on Tuesday tracking the weakness of the American currency in the overseas market.

However, a surge in crude oil prices capped sharp gains for the local unit, forex traders said.

Indian shares were largely flat on Tuesday, as losses in index heavyweight ITC following its demerger update offset gains in metal stocks after China’s pledge to provide policy support to aid economic recovery.

At 10.14 am, the Nifty 50 index was up 0.07% to 19,684.85, while the S&P BSE Sensex gained 0.02% to 66,403.50, as of 10:14 a.m. IST.

Copper prices have been declining sharply since Friday last week. The Copper Futures contract traded on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) rose to a high of ₹739.70 per kg on Thursday and then declined sharply from there. The contract is currently trading at ₹718 per cent.

The global rice market has turned precarious following India’s ban on white rice exports. It has totally become a seller’s market with prices of even cargoes in transit being hiked by $50-100 a tonne, said traders.

Shares of Indian conglomerate ITC shares fell as much as 3.3% on Tuesday, extending a slide from the previous session, as investors baulked at the company’s plans to retain a 40% stake in its hotels business after spinning it off.

ITC said on Monday it would spin off the hotel business, separating it from its cigarettes and food units, but retain a 40% stake in the new entity, with ITC shareholders holding the rest.

The company’s stock ended nearly 4% lower on Monday.

“We believe some investors may have preferred a vertical split (100% direct),” Jefferies analysts said in a note, pointing to the cash-guzzling nature of the hotel business.

The business has contributed less than 5% to ITC’s revenue and earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) over the last decade but for over 20% of capital expenditure, Jefferies said.
