With a cut in supply and rise in demand, poultry prices are on the rise with egg prices rising 12 per cent over a week.
Egg prices are ruling at Rs 3.10 a piece against Rs 2.75 last week.
According to P. Selvaraj, President, National Egg Coordination Committee, Namakkal Zone, a cut in production due to summer coupled with pricey vegetables and rise in consumption have led to the price hike.
The end of Easter in Kerala, a major market for poultry trade, has boosted demand. This is also seen as the reason for the price increase.
“Prices are set to rise further with the ban on fishing on the East Coast coming into effect from April 15. Moreover, to tackle water shortage and unaffordable feed materials, poultry farms in the region are selling birds that are 65-weeks old as layer birds.
“This will result in further increase in prices of poultry products,” he said.
NECC has raised the prices of layer birds to Rs 57/kg (Rs 46) while the Broiler Coordination Committee has fixed the prices at Rs 69/kg (Rs 67).
Broiler prices are likely to see a slow and steady increase as the demand for animal protein gathers momentum with the onset of summer.
