The West Bengal Agricultural Marketing department is planning to set up a market monitoring committee, which will track prices of agricultural commodities, particularly potato and onion.
The committee will also take steps to prevent black marketing and hoarding.
“The committee will also ensure that farmers are paid the right price for their produce,” Mr Arup Roy, State Agricultural Marketing Minister said while addressing reporters at the State Secretariat on Thursday.
According to Mr Roy, there is a need to set up more cold storages in the State. Plans are afoot to set up the first ever onion cold storage in the State, he said. The Minister, however, did not give details of the plan. Currently, there are 488 cold storages, of which 422 are for potato and the remaining 66 are multipurpose storages.
