Rejecting the plea of Federation of Turmeric Farmers Associations not to sell their produce below Rs 9,000, some farmers sold their produce at Rs 6,836 a quintal on Tuesday.
For the second day only 3,000 bags of turmeric arrived for sale. Of this, 25 per cent was sold. At the Erode Turmeric Merchants Association sales yard, only 701 bags of turmeric arrived for sale of which 249 were sold. Similarly, at the Regulated Marketing Committee, 401 bags were on offer for sale, with farmers bringing from Erode, Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri districts. Only 22 bags were sold for the highest price of Rs 6,611 a quintal.
At the Erode and Gobichettipalayam Cooperative Marketing societies 348 bags arrived and 308 were lopped up. The super fine variety Salem Hybrid turmeric fetched the highest price of Rs 8,121 a quintal, Rs 1,200 more than Monday’s price. Only 30 bags of the hybrid crop were on offer and all got sold.
R.K.V. Ravishankar, President of the Erode Turmeric Merchants Association, said that traders are awaiting fresh orders and they are presuming that prices will improve only by the end of November or in the middle of December. Till then, the prices will remain below Rs 9,000 a quintal. At the Erode Turmeric merchants Association Sales yard, the finger variety was sold at Rs 3,916-6,836, root variety at Rs 3,499-6,261 .
Salem Hybrid Crop: The finger variety was sold at Rs 5,937-8,121; root variety Rs 5,896-6,521. Of the total arrival of 701 bags, 250 were sold.
At the Regulated Marketing Committee, the finger variety was sold at Rs 6,099-6,611 , root variety Rs 5,789-6,261 . At the Gobichettipalayam Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Society, the finger variety was sold at Rs 5,633-6,869; the root variety at Rs 5,072-6,089. At the Erode Cooperative Marketing Society, the finger variety was sold at Rs 5,700-6,676 , the root variety Rs 5,469-6,220.
